New Hunter S. Thompson Documentary
This is the trailer for the fun-loving but poignant film that is a tribute to Gonzo journalist, Hunter S. Thompson, and a document of how his legacy continues to live on in the hearts and minds of his fans. Blasted!!! follows the many "Gonzo Patriots" across America that volunteered their personally owned artillery to fulfill the good doctor's last wish to have his ashes fired from a cannon. Before Johnny Depp became involved with the ceremony, and paid over 2 million dollars for a professional fireworks company to blast his friend's ashes from a 200 foot tall 'Gonzo fist,' an essay contest was held by the Aspen Daily News (at the request of Hunter's family) to see who would be available to provide the service of firing his ashes. Over 50 private cannon owners applied and though these letters were published in Harper's magazine, these brave men and women, who had come forward to fulfill the dying wish of their hero...were eventually forgotten.

DVD's for this film can be purchased at www.gonzopatriots.com

Blue Kraning, Los Angeles based documentary director and Emmy Award winning writer, has just released the DVD of his film, Blasted, The Gonzo Patriots of Hunter S. Thompson, which recently premiered at the Starz Denver International Film Festival and the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Three years in the making, this film is a tribute to a great journalist and renowned physician. Kraning says the film, “is intended for any fan of Hunter S. Thompson or just anyone who likes to see large stuffed animals blown to bits by a homemade Bowling Ball Cannon fired by a man in a purple polyester suit, or see transgender Civil War re-enactors blast their aptly named mountain howitzer...’Lucrecia,’ while reciting Hunter’s wisdom. I made this film entirely as a one-man-band, in the tradition of Gonzo individuality and artistic freedom, so I will be distributing the film entirely by myself by selling the film off my website at www.gonzopatriots.com”

"Hunter S. Thompson embodied the American ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Blue Kraning's Blasted!!! is a twisted, anarchic, fun, and funny tribute to Hunter, those ideals, and Americans who don't merely mouth the Declaration of Independence, but live it." - Michael Simmons, The Huffington Post

“These are not the famous actors, politicians or even journalists. These are Hunter's readers who are “his people” in the purest sense, an army of thoughtful citizens who are inspired by Hunter's work and who do a fine job of carrying on his legacy.” –Anita Thompson, wife of the late author, Hunter S. Thompson

For any of you are Burners -- or aspire to attend Burning Man -- I'd like to announce a brand-new daily newspaper for the Playa: The Black Rock Beacon.

Up until this year, Burning Man funded the Black Rock Gazette, which appeared about six times at Black Rock City -- once on the way in, no matter which day you arrived (the Gate Edition) and then five or so daily issues during the event. For this year, the Burning Man organization has decided not to fund the daily issues of the Gazette, although it is planning to do a Gate edition.

Many of the former staff members have banded together to create the Black Rock Beacon, which we hope will be even better than the Gazette. If you are going to Burning Man and looking for something fun to do that will highlight your real-world skills, please consider joining us. We especially need reporters and editors, which is why I'm posting here. It's all volunteer, of course, but the perks are great.

We have a website at www.blackrockbeacon.org that already contains some Burning Man-related articles, with more to come. We're assigning those and some advance pieces for the Playa papers, as well as beats for Black Rock City. We're going to be producing and printing the paper on the Playa, and if you're interested in publishing, there may be some valuable insights for you as well.

If you'd like more information, message me and/or join our Tribe at theblackrockbeacon.tribe.net.

I completed a bachelors degree in Communication, in 2003 , and than ended up taking work as a graphic artist instead. I really would like to write features, or work as some sort of reporter but I really dont know how to go about "getting" that first writing assignment. I can take really good photographs, but currently I dont know how to tie it in. I didnt get involved at the "university paper" so I really dont have any "work" samples. Can you tell me the best way to get started? Even if its just slowly, on the side feature writing. Do I assemble clips, write stories for "imaginary editors" so I have samples? Any secrets.. I really need to make a career change... the only question is HOW ? How did you get started in your career as a professional journalist, writer?

Sanitization (cleaning or decontamination) and whitewashing (from whitewash) are almost interchangeable terms that refer to particular acts or campaigns of censorship or omission which seek to "clean up" the portrayal of particular issues and facts which are already known, but which may conflict with a presented point of view.
The California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships

The California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships program offers journalists from print, broadcast and ethnic media a chance to step away from the newsroom to hone their skills in health care journalism. In intimate workshops, field trips and discussions, fellows learn from the country’s most respected health and medical experts, from top journalists in the field and from each other.

The all-expenses-paid program – which includes free tuition, meals and lodging – consists of two intensive three-day sessions conveniently held in five regions of the state. Funded with a $1.8 million grant from the California Endowment and offered by USC’s Annenberg School for Communication, this pioneering initiative aims to set a national standard for multicultural health journalism.

The program’s philosophy is that all journalists – not just those on the health beat – should have the opportunity to participate. The workshops provide reporters, editors and producers with tools and timely briefings so they can better inform their audiences about a subject that daily touches their lives. Fellows team up with mentors – senior journalists who offer guidance on fellowship-related stories. The program also provides opportunities for collaboration among journalists from general circulation and ethnic media.

Workshop highlights for 2006 include:
The inside story at your local hospital.
The science behind sales pitches on new medical studies.
The obesity epidemic, AIDS, homelessness and health.
Avian flu, stem cell research.
Immigrant and multicultural health.
A California Health Care Primer: The Players, The Stakes, the Future.
Hot topics in environmental health.
Great storytelling techniques.

2006 FELLOWSHIPS

The California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships program will select fifteen to twenty Fellows in each of five California regions:
San Francisco Bay Area
Central Valley & Central Coast
Sacramento & Points North
San Diego / The Border
Greater Los Angeles
In each region, fellows attend two local three-day sessions, usually held six weeks apart. The workshops begin with a Thursday night dinner and end midday on Sundays.

Hi folks, I have been a print journalist for past 7 years and left my secure though increasingly boring job a few weeks ago. However, instead of capitalising on my equity and jumping headlong into the next one, I have been seriously considering making a shift from print to internet journalism.

My arguments in favour of my decision are -

a) as far as immediacy of news goes, web already rules
b) readership surverys show that internet has been, with exponential growth in broadband and general access, the fastest growing media sector and already the first choice of today's youth for news

Cons -
a) unchartered territory, so there is little information on what exactly the pre-requisite skills are
b) credibility, though if surveys are anything to go by, people trust bloggers more than newspapers nowdays

What's your opinion and what you think those required skills would be?

The Spectator is America's longest running adult newspaper, currently in our 26th year. We are in the process of significantly increasing the quality and coverage of the publication, and in parallel with this we are seeking to increase our distribution in the Bay Area. The territory we are looking to cover stretches from Novato and Vacaville in the north, to Antioch and Livermore in the east, to San Jose and Santa Cruz in the south, and all areas inbetween.

We are looking for at least 20 people living anywhere within our region to sell our publication into adult stores, liquor stores, and adult-focused retail outlets, for ongoing sale to the public.

Hello everyone. My name is Buck. I am Arts Editor for ALARM, a quarterly magazine focusing on emerging and unique musicians and artists. We have been around for four years and have a sizeable distribution, covering the entire US and several other countries. We are looking to expand our content. Specifically, we are interested in writers who are interested in covering the arts. In the past few issues we have covered canvas painters, a hobo carver, an accordion restorer, a Hopi katsina carver, an abandoned building photographer and several other types of artists. As you can tell, we often focus on artists whose work falls outside the conventional parameters of "art".

As the magazine is still growing, our focus right now is on putting our funds into making ALARM into the best magazine possible. For that reason, none of the contributors to ALARM (inlcuding me) are paid at this time. However, this would be a great opportunity to get some clips in a kick-ass, growing magazine.

If you are interested, send me a message. For more information on ALARM, you can also visit www.alarmpress.com.
